In Ashes of Creation there are (as of now) 8 archetypes to start with. They are; Tank, Fighter, Rogue, Ranger, Bard, Cleric, Summoner & Mage. However, once you progress enough in the game, you will be able to augment your character with a secondary class.
To give you an example, a Mage who augments with the Fighter class will become a Spellsword. Ranger + Rogue will become a Predator. Cleric + Tank will become a Paladin. This means that there will be a total of 64 combinations to explore.
You can also augment with your primary class if you’d like to specialize in a particular role. For example, tank + tank gives you a badass tank. 🙂
For now, let’s take a look at the basics.
Tanks will be focused on absorbing damage and controlling the fights. Crowd control + durability and you’ll be a very valuable ally on the battlefield.
This doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to deal damage yourself, you just won’t be specializing in that.
Fighters will be physical damage dealers, mastering many different weapons but not specializing in any. If you’d like to ‘deal physical damage’, then this is your class.
Rangers will also deal damage, but from range, as the name implies. They will focus on the bow as their primary weapon.
Rogues will also deal damage but probably play out more like an assassin archetype, with utility and stealth. Burst damage will be their specialty.
Bards will provide utility and support for allies, buffs & debuffs to help the whole party.
Clerics will be specializing in protection and healing, as well as dealing with the ‘life essence’ itself, draining life from their enemies and providing more of it for allies.
Summoners will focus on conjuration spells. I don’t know much about them yet, but I am very excited to find out more.
Mages will be focused on the elements and magic in general. Changing the realities around them, dealing elemental damage and generally being very adept at magic itself.
